Nelson Nugent and his wife, Mary Cynthia Haley, came from Mississippi in 1827 and settled near Ball, Louisiana. Their son Charles was born there in 1834. A few years after Charles’ birth, the family moved to Bertram Prairie near Rochelle. In 1873, Charles became the sheriff of Grant Parish. In 1922, at the age of 88, Charles was interviewed by R. B. Brooks of Urania. Mr. Brooks shared some of Mr. Nugent’s memories in an article in the May 6, 1922, Alexandria Town Talk.
