Best Black Friday Deals

Although Black Friday shopping (the Friday after Thanksgiving) is not the phenomena that it used to be, many across the nation still perform the ritual and are on the lookout for the best deals.

According to a recent study by wallethub. com, the deals are still out there and it might surprise you which major retailers are offering the biggest discounts.

The study revealed that JCPenney has the highest overall discount rate, at 59.12 percent, while Costco has the lowest at 17.07 percent.

Diana Polk, WalletHub Communications Manager, noted that the overall average discount for Black Friday is 35 percent. She recommended consumers aim for this discount amount or higher to avoid Black Friday traps.

“The Apparel & Accessories category has one of the biggest shares of discounted items, 15.72 percent off all offers, whereas the Consumer Packaged Goods category has the smallest at 4.16 percent,” Polk reports.

While JCPenney was found to offer the biggest discounts on Black Friday at 59.12 percent, the remaining top ten are: Macy’s (58.19%); Belk (54.76%); Kohl’s (48.81%); Target (32.70%); BJ’s (30.11%); Best Buy (29.78%); Amazon (28.48%); Walmart (26.88%); and rounding out the top ten was Dell (25.79%).

JCPenney has earned the top spot in this report since 2014. They offer steep discounts on extremely expensive items. For instance, this year, a $6,249.98 diamond engagement ring is being offered for just $1,666.65.

The top places to shop for the highest discounts for specialized items are: Apparel & Accessories – JCPenney (57.83%); Computers & Phones – Kohl’s (37.75%); Consumer Electronics – Newegg (43.22%); Consumer Packaged Goods – Macy’s (45.09%); Toys – Macy’s (44.52%); Appliances – Belk (60.26%); Furniture – Macy’s (47.81%); Jewelry – Kohl’s (71.93%); and All Other Product Categories – Belk (65.79%).

Last year’s Black Friday sales drew 122.7 million Americans to shop in person and 130.2 million to shop online.
