Hardtner, who was instrumental in the creation of La-Salle Parish from Catahoula Parish in 1905 and known as the “Father of Reforestation”, tragically died when a train hit the car he was traveling in at Kahn, Louisiana (West Baton Rouge Parish) on August 7, 1935. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.)
