I remember years ago, listening to my Grandpa Jim Richmond, a Baptist minister for the final 35 years of his life, talk about how bad it was during the Great Depression and the years that followed. His generation survived the harshest of economic environments, having to scrap and save everything just to survive (In case anyone is interested in knowing why your grandparents never threw anything away – that is why!). Born in 1920, Grandpa grew up with nothing and his “Silent Generation” learned how to make something out nothing and then stretch that nothing to feed an entire family.
