District Action Begins for Giants

Last season the Jena Giants finished in third in District 2-3A behind Buckeye and Caldwell. The Giants’ season would end in the second round of the playoffs at Westlake. This year, the Giants return a core group of seniors in Jacob Belcher, Brayden Oakes, Calex Campbell, Zoyle Gemar and Cayden Mursch and they are looking make their mark on the program.

The Giants come into this week on a sixgame winning streak. Last week, the Giants defeated Ebarb 15-2. Cayden Mursch picked up the win with 3 innings pitched giving up only 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. Zoyle Gemar was 2-2 while Jacob Belcher and Carson Willis each had 3 RBIs in the game.

On Friday, the Giants traveled to Monterey where they picked up a 28-11 victory. Wyatt Overstreet picked up the win on the mound as he finished with 5 strikeouts. Isaiah Todd had 2 hits, 4 RBIs and a homerun. Zoyle Gemar had a homerun and 3 RBIs. Carson Willis had 3 hits, a double and 5 RBIs. Saturday the Giants would defeat Downsville 16-1. Calex Campbell pitched 3 innings giving up only one hit with 3 strikeouts. Jacob Belcher had 2 hits with a homerun and 3 RBIs. Zoyle Gemar was 3-3 in the game with a double. Senior Brayden Oakes had 5 stolen bases in the game. He now has over 100 stolen bases in his career.

The Giants are now 11-6 on the season and this week they will start district play as on Tuesday, March 11, they will have hosted Caldwell. On Thursday (March 13) of this week, they will be at Franklin Parish and on Friday they will be home against Block.
