The Centennial Cultural Center in Olla hosted their annual Art Camp last week, the second camp held so far this summer. Over 30 students attended the camp, from ages four to fourteen, coming from Olla, Jena, Columbia, Georgetown and Texas.
Attending campers were taught several art skills and concepts and were able to put their knowledge to the test through various projects.
Returning art instructor Angela Smith taught the older students, and lessons included art styles, techniques, mediums and much more. The children learned about famous artists such as John James Audubon, known for his realistic bird paintings, and Pablo Picasso’s unique cubism and modern art.
Over the course of four days, students were able to create their own work using watercolors, acrylics and pencil colors, and try various techniques like metal embossing, create abstract art using geometric shapes and make their own portrait collage.
Jennifer McClure instructed the younger students, bringing high level art techniques to fun and engaging projects. Assisting during the camp was Gabby Chapman, Melissa Stamper and the center’s director Donna Lindsey.
Also instructing for one day of the camp was Alyssa Guidry, the Community Development Coordinator with the Arts Council of Central Louisiana. Guidry instructed both age groups on how to make their own pottery masterpiece.
This year’s Art Camp was made possible through generous donations from the Centennial Cultural Center Friends.
The Centennial Cultural Center will host three more camps this summer – Rocket Camp, Science Camp and Literacy Camp.
