Buying and owning your own home is the main component of the American dream. Young people today need a way to purchase a house, have children and perpetuate our American economy and family culture. Unfortunately this has become very difficult financially speaking. When we married my mother loaned us $1,000 for a down payment and we purchased a nice three bedroom, one bath brick home just out of town for $30,000. We got an FHA low interest loan and paid $137 a month for our house. It was a semi staggering amount for us at the time. Cable cost eight dollars a month back then and now it is one hundred eighty seven a month with no extras. The house had central air conditioning and heating that I was not familiar with. My wife was and showed me how to operate this new fangled contraption. If you want heat just put it on heat and every room will be warm. The same goes for the air conditioning. I was so impressed. Back in 1977 like many young couples we were pretty frugal by necessity. If something broke I had to fix it and my wife made our curtains. It is amazing what can be done when you are young and have no other options.
