The Centennial Cultural Center in Olla hosted their annual Art Camp last week, the second camp held so far this summer. Over 50 students attended the camp, from ages four to fourteen, coming from Olla, Jena, Columbia, Georgetown and Texas.
Attending campers were taught several art skills and concepts and were able to put their knowledge to the test through various projects.
Returning art instructor Angela Smith taught the older students, and lessons included art styles, techniques, mediums and much more. The children also learned about the work of artists involved in the Fauve art movement, like Henri Matisse, along with artists in the Pop Art movement like Andy Warhol.
Over the course of four days, students were able to create their own work using watercolors, acrylics and pencil colors, and try various techniques like metal embossing, creating abstract art using geometric shapes and making their own portrait collage. At the end of the camp, their art was put on display for their parents to see. The kids were also sent home with a take-home self-portrait project with instruction so they could continue doing artwork at home.
Gabby Chapman and assistant Jennifer McClure instructed the younger students, bringing high level art techniques to fun and engaging projects.
Also assisting during the camp were KaRissa Shell, Natalie Nagler, Ashton Cockerham, Chaeryl Majors, the center’s director Donna Lindsey, and the CCC Board’s President R.B. Couch.
This year’s Art Camp was made possible through generous donations from the Centennial Cultural Center Friends.
The Centennial Cultural Center will host three more camps this summer: Special Needs Camp, Literacy Camp and Science Camp.
