Lady Giants Dominate Lady Spartans

The Jena Lady Giants opened up District 2-3A play this past week as they took on the Caldwell Lady Spartans Friday night, January 10 where they dominated the district foe 54-12.

The Lady Giants came into the week with an 11-7 record and ranked in the top 10 of Division III Non-Select power rankings. The Lady Giants would travel to Plainview on Tuesday and would come up short as Plainview would pick up the 61-44 victory.

On Friday, the Lady Giants would host the Caldwell Spartans in their first district game of the season. This season the district changed a little bit as teams will only play each other once. So, this is the only matchup between Jena and Caldwell in the regular season. Caldwell came into the game with a 2-13 overall record and 0-1 in district play. The Lady Giants would be without a couple of players as seniors Kaylee Kemp and Braylie Poole would be out with injuries.

Senior Noel Kimbrough would score the first basket of the night to put the Lady Giants up 2-0 and they would not look back from there. The Lady Giants would lead 19-9 near the end of the first quarter and would then go on a 29-0 run that wouldn’t end until the 3rd quarter to increase their lead to 48-9. The Lady Giants would go on to win 54-12.

The Lady Giants would have 10 different players score in the game. Freshman Jacquelyn Brooks would lead the Lady Giants with 10 points in the game. Triniti Williams had 8 points, Kaylee Hardie had 8 points, Hallie Phillips had 7 points, Sophie Parker had 7 points, Lily Lacroix had 5 points, Noel Kimbrough had 3 points, Heidi Crawford had 3 points, Karlie Kimball had 2 points and Ahja Dorsey had 1 point.

With the win the Lady Giants are now 12-8 overall and 1-0 in district play. This week they hosted Harrisonburg at home on Monday night and on Friday night, January 17, they will host the Bolton Lady Bears for their second district game. On Tuesday night of next week, January 21, they will travel to Forest High School for a non-district game before one of their biggest district games of the year as they travel to Bunkie January 24.

Remember, you can hear all district games on FM 102.7 KJNA starting at 6:00 p.m. If you are not in the listening area then you can download the MIXLR app and search for KJNAFM or go online at www.kjnafmjena.mixlr.com.
