During the 1930s thorough the 1940’s, organized health care for LaSalle residents was non-existent and when it became present, was administered by local physicians doing house calls. Pictured above is the late Edith Bailey (holding baby), wife of J.G. Bailey and her children who experienced such early home care. (AI generated color enhanced)

LaSalle Legends and Lore
Before the advancement of local hospitals, antibiotics and readily available health facilities in rural LaSalle Parish, medical care was quite different from today’s modern offerings. Written and oral records tell of the essentiality of self-reliance such as home remedies, traveling physicians, and a local midwife or two that filled the gap for what was then considered ‘home’ health care. A few remaining elders recall being recipients of this early health care system, while many of their memories come from stories shared on the front porch or in the living room around an old fireplace.
