On July 2nd, the Library became a concert for its Summer Reading Program. Guest, Johannes Quilitz, the host of Drum Life brought a real memorable experience to both children and adults alike.
Quilitz opened Thursday, with a fun performance using a drum. Around the room people could sit down in front of a drum to use for the rest of the performance. Each drum provided was also made by Quilitz himself.
Drum Life is a program Quilitz does nationwide. He travels all over the nation to lead hands-on rhythm workshops at public libraries, schools, and festivals. In his program the audience is a part of the performance. He offers a wide range of percussion instruments for his audience to play like drums, tambourines, and shakers. He teaches those who don’t normally play drums basic patterns to guide his audience into a unified groove.
Even if someone doesn’t have an instrument, he encourages them to participate via handclapping and knee-slapping.
The program was filled with smiling faces and music that echoed throughout the whole library.
Following this performance, the library plans to host the LA Snake ID. This event will be held at the LaSalle Parish library at 10 A.M. and 2 P.M. at the Olla Library if you want to go to a later show.
During July, all programs and special entertainers were provided in collaboration with the McKinney-Vento Federal Grant through the LaSalle Parish School Board.
